The main difference is that while both Vibramycin 100mg and Doxycycline contain the same active ingredient, Doxycycline is able to inhibit protein synthesis only when used in conjunction with topical anesthetics.2 Doxycycline is also an antibiotic, which means it prevents the growth of bacteria when it is used to treat bacterial infections.3

Doxycycline, particularly in its hyclate form, is a widely used antibiotic known for its broad-spectrum efficacy against various bacterial diseases. It is commonly prescribed for treating conditions such as acne, malaria, urinary tract infections, and respiratory diseases. Here’s a comprehensive analysis of the market and price projections for doxycycline.
The global doxycycline hyclate market has been experiencing significant growth. As of 2023, the market size was valued at approximately USD 1.2 billion. It is projected to reach USD 1.8 billion by 2031, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.5% from 2024 to 2031[1][3].
Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.
Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.
Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results. You should complete the course of Doxycycline as your doctor prescribes for better results. Some common side effects of Doxycycline are nausea (feeling or being sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. Please consult your doctor if these side effects become troublesome.
Doxycycline is pregnancy category D (high risk) medicines, so its use in pregnant and nursing mothers is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause teeth staining (yellow-grey-brown). Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness when taken along with Doxycycline. Before using Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you ever had an allergy to Doxycycline, have kidney problems, liver problems, swollen food pipe (esophagitis) or muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). Please do not drink alcohol with Doxycycline as it may increase the unpleasant side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.
You should take Doxycycline preferably before having a blood test to distinguish between pre-existing heart disease and heart attack. Doxycycline may cause dizziness as it may be used with certain medications. Check with your doctor if you have any such caution with Doxycycline. Doxycycline may rarely cause a prolonged (lasting more than 4 hours) hypersensitivity (liver-related) reaction. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery if you feel dizzy as this may result in a blood disorder (see "Avoid Doxycycline with High Risk") or severe dizziness with Doxycycline. Please consult your doctor if you have any concerns or additional information. You should avoid exposure to sunlight while taking Doxycycline.Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking Doxycycline. Before taking Doxycycline, inform your doctor if you have or have ever had pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) or other conditions relating to a virus (such as the addition of Doxycycline in pulmonary arterial hypertension tablets or doxepin). Please consult your doctor if you have any such condition.
Doxycycline may cause diarrhoea in people taking dairy products. It is not known if Doxycycline works for tooth development. However, the doctor may recommend dental treatment if there is good reason why Doxycycline is not effective in tooth development.
Doxycycline is not to be used by children.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. However, like all medicines, Doxycycline may cause side effects. Some of the side effects of Doxycycline are as follows: nausea (feeling or being sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, feeling sick (feeling anxious or depressed), asthenia (stomach ache), allergic-type reactions (like rash; itching; hives; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat), skin rash, itchy skin, blistering, peeling, or difficulty breathing. If Doxycycline is hypersensitive to any of the excipients, onlay oratin, then Doxycycline may cause Doxycycline to interact with other medicines and cause undesirable side effects.
It is important to inform your doctor if you have any heart, kidney or liver problems. The doctor may advise you to use other medicines together with Doxycycline. It is not known if Doxycycline is addictive.
Doxycycline should be taken with caution for pregnant women and breast-feeding women.
